Red, White & Blue by Laurie Simpson
July 18-November 9, 2017
Laughlin Conference Room (Third Floor)
Inspired by the quirky, scrappy qualities of traditional American patchwork, Laurie Simpson creates one-of-a-kind quilts based on antique textiles. Simpson collaborates with her sister, the rug-maker Polly Minick, on a fabric line for Moda, and the sisters co-authored Blue & White: Living with Textiles You Love (Martingale, 2017).
Working with a limited color palette, Simpson notes, is an exercise in design that requires her to pay special attention to value. These quilts, in classic, cool blue and white, with dashes of warm red, evoke the playful spirit of summertime and of American quiltmakers then and now.
