Eiko Okano’s Delectable World

A leading Japanese quilt artist since the 1990s, Eiko Okano has long displayed a predilection for depicting food. She finds beauty in everyday life, and considers her daily meals especially appealing. Okano celebrates commonplace things in cloth and in writing (in both English and Japanese), recording recipes and reminiscences, and approaches traditional American quilt patterns with the same sense of fun and invention. Her kimono quilts—a form common among Japanese artists—are bold and playful whether they explore food, botanical forms, or national identity.
