Quilts in Context: The Making of Meaning
Sixth Biennial Symposium
April 26-27, 2013

The sixth biennial symposium focuses on how the meaning of quilts is shaped and altered by various contexts:

  • Domestic interiors, decorative, furnishings, and architectural contexts
  • Relationships between quilts and fashion/style that situate them within shared material contexts
  • Appearance in photos, print, advertising that show real or imagined contexts made possible by technology

Thursday, April 25

“A New Look at Old Photographs”
Joan Severa, Curator emeritus of costume at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin and author of the award-winning book, Dressed for the Photographer: Ordinary Americans and Fashion, 1840–1900.

Location: International Quilt Study Center & Museum (IQSCM)
Behind-the-Scenes Tour of Conservation Work Room with Kim Taylor, IQSCM Collections Manager or Carolyn Ducey, Curator of Collections. On view will be a selection of seldom seen, distinctive and unusual quilts from the IQSCM’s Permanent Collection.

Afternoon Program
“Discovering Meaning in Historic Quilt Photos”
Janet Finley, author of Quilts in Everyday Life, 1855-1955: A 100-Year Photographic History, combined her life-long fascination with photography and quilts into a collection of 1,000 historic photographic images with quilts. A selection is on view in the exhibition ‘Posing with Patchwork: Quilts in Photographs, 1855-1955,’ for which she served as guest exhibition curator.

Optional Activity – Walk to Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery and view current exhibition.

Reception and Informal Fashion Show featuring fashions designed by UNL Apparel Design Students, which incorporate fabric manipulations inspired by quilting and quiltmaking traditions.

5:30 p.m.

“Domesticating Quilts: Furnishings, Formalism and Folk Art”

Lynne Bassett, an independent scholar specializing in New England's historic costume and textiles. From 1995-2000 she was the curator of textiles and fine arts at Old Sturbridge Village.

$125 for members
$170 for nonmembers (includes a one-year individual museum membership)
