Join noted collector and historian, Jonathan Holstein, as he discusses the "Quilts in Common" exhibition. Mr. Holstein served as curator of a number of quilt exhibitions including the seminal exhibition "Abstract Design in American Quilts" for the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City in 1971; lecturer, author of numerous articles, catalogs and books on quilts including "American Pieced Quilts," "The Pieced Quilt: An American Design Tradition" and "Abstract Design in American Quilts: A Biography of an Exhibition."

Quilts by Nancy Crow were featured in one of the museum’s inaugural exhibitions, "Nancy Crow: Cloth, Culture & Context". Ms. Crow describes the evolution of her work, the many inspirations she finds, and the challenges she sees ahead.

Lecture "Recycling and Resourcefulness: Quilts of the 1930s" by Merikay Waldvogel

Merikay Waldvogel (Knoxville, Tennessee) is a nationally known quilt authority with books, exhibitions, articles and television appearances to her credit. She is best known for her published works on 1930s quilts including: "Soft Covers for Hard Times: Quiltmaking and the Great Depression" and "Patchwork Souvenirs of the 1933 Chicago World's Fair". She was the 2003 Visiting Faculty Scholar at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum.

Lecture, "From Fibers to Fieldwork", the research of Nao Nomura and Janneken Smucker presented to the American Quilt Study Group, October 2006
Presented by Nao Nomura, this lecture describes the use of fiber analysis and fieldwork techniques to more closely determine quilt provenance.

Lecture, "Patchwork and Quilting in the UK" by Dr. Sue Marks

Dr. Marks holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Sunderland, United Kingdom. She has studied and presents lectures regarding art and design history, particularly the divisions that occur within the arts and crafts, and feminist debate. She currently is the Chair of Selectors for the British Quilt Study Group and a 2007 Visiting Scholar at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum. Her research interests include the study of historic and contemporary British quiltmaking.

Lecture: "Quilt Surface Design Symposium: Incubating the Innovative Quilt" by Michael James.

Michael James, Chair of UNL's Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design, Textiles Artist and quilter delivered this lecture at the opening of the exhibition "Give and Take". This exhibition featured quilts created by artists who have been instructors, students or both at the Quilt Surface Design Symposium (QSDS). The QSDS is a two-week educational program for non-traditional quilters held each year in Columbus, Ohio. The show celebrated the importance of the teacher and student relationship among quilt artists. The work of a representative group of professional quilt artists was paired with work of their students.

Laurel Horton is a folklorist and an internationally known quilt researcher. A native of Kentucky, she earned a B.A. in English and an M.S. in Library Science from the University of Kentucky, and an M.A. degree in Folklore from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Virginia Gunn is a professor of clothing, textiles, and interiors in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences at The University of Akron. She teaches courses in historic costume, history of fashion, history of interior design, textile conservation, and material-culture studies. She is curator of the School’s historic costume and textile collection.
Dr. Gunn received her B.S. from Kansas State University, Summa Cum Laude; her M.S. from Syracuse University, and her PhD. in History from The University of Akron. She served on the board of directors of the American Quilt Study Group for ten years and was president from 1990 to 1993. She was the editor of Uncoverings, the annual volume of research papers for AQSG, from 1994 to 2003. She is also a member of the International Textile and Apparel Association and the Costume Society of America.
