Quilting celebrities Marianne and Mary Fons will present “Beyond the Binding: Everyday Quilters, Extraordinary Quilts” at Quilt House, 33rd and Holdrege Streets, on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus on Saturday, April 19, at 3 p.m. A reception will follow.
Proceeds will benefit the programs of the International Quilt Study Center & Museum. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the IQSCM. Tickets are $30 each for the lecture only and $50 for the lecture and reception and are available at www.iqscfriends.org or by calling (402) 423-6356.
Co-hosts of the popular PBS series “Fons and Porter Love of Quilting”, avid quilters Marianne Fons and her daughter Mary Fons use colorful multimedia to present unusual quilts made by mostly unknown quilters from the past, examining just what makes each work exceptional.
Marianne Fons, with her partner Liz Porter, co-edited the magazine Fons and Porter Love of Quilting. Its popularity led to the creation of the television series of the same name in 1995. When Liz Porter retired, Mary joined her mother as co-hostess. A professional writer and performer based in Chicago, Mary also hosts Quilty, an online show offered weekly on QNNtv.com. Targeted primarily to the beginner quilter, Quilty offers instruction, guidance, and inspiration to those who want to learn to make a quilt, whatever their age or experience level. In 2012, Mary became editor of Quilty magazine (New Track Media), which quickly met with critical and commercial acclaim.
The Friends of the International Quilt Study Center & Museum is a non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to supporting Quilt House by raising awareness and funding for programming. More information at iqscfriends.org or quiltstudy.org.
