Dualities: Emiko Toda Loeb's Double-Sided Quilts

Emiko Toda Loeb is best known for her double-sided Log Cabin quilts. Over many years, she developed an intricate process for simultaneously sewing a Log Cabin block that has two different designs on each side. Beyond their technical complexity, Loeb's quilts are also visually refined and genre-defying. She explores a range of forms, from geometric to biomorphic, that break out of the rigid or repeat patterns typically associated with Log Cabin quilts. At times, a quilt's sides complement one another, working within a unified theme; at others, they seem to clash, creating a dynamic that emphasizes the twofold nature of the piece. In displaying them suspended in space, the IQSCM offers viewers the opportunity to circle each quilt and appreciate the duality of Loeb's work.
