5:30 pm, Friday March 2, 2012
Location: International Quilt Study Center & Museum
Description: Presented by Lincoln Quilters Guild (LQG) Scholarship Winner, Ellen Rushman. LQG Reception to follow.

Over the last several years, a new trend in quiltmaking has emerged. From simple minimalist designs to quilts that take advantage of all the bright prints available, many quilters, both young and old, are making modern quilts. Many modern quilters are members of a new guild, The Modern Quilt Guild.

Quilt Studies graduate student Ellen Rushman has spent the last year exploring this group. She interviewed 26 members of seven MQG’s across the United States. From her research, it is clear that modern quilting is both an attitude as well as an aesthetic. Modern quilters are very open in their approach towards quiltmaking in that they are willing to try new approaches and techniques, and they are not overly concerned with perfection. Modern quilts have grown out of historic American quiltmaking tradition, however, they often include a bright array of fabrics, and many move away from the block format towards a more minimalist product.
