Hourglass strippie doll quilt
IQSCM, Mary Ghormley Collection, 2008.034.0209
The alternating whole-cloth “bars” in this doll quilt are made from a variety of late-nineteenth century indigo prints. Because it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between a discharge print and a resist print,* we cannot know for sure which is which in this quilt. We do know, however, that these are typical prints for their era.
*Sometimes you can tell the difference by looking at the reverse of the cloth; however, this is normally not an option with a quilt.
