Marti Michell and the Business of Quilts

Marti Michell and the Business of Quilts

Marti Michell was an early player in the commercialization of quilts and quiltmaking that began in the 1970s, as the textile industry in the U.S. was disappearing. Michell’s bestsellers—the wildly popular quilt kits marketed by Women’s Day magazine—were supremely conventional products that emerged in the wake of a counter-cultural movement that brought cloth and quilts into public consciousness. The rise, fall, and re-creation of Michell’s family-run business is a story of entrepreneurship, and a look at overseas manufacturing, vertical integration, and the global economy—all of which play a role in today’s DIY movement and the “business of art.”
