Africa to America

Africa to America

West Africa is a region rich in textile traditions. While woven and dyed fabrics such as Ghanaian kente and Nigerian adire are better known, pieced and appliqued textiles are also prevalent/found in many West African cultures. Artifacts showcasing these techniques range from Nigerian Igbo masquerade costumes to Beninese Fon banners. Today, entrepreneurial artists have created hybrid styles, such as Nigerian tourist items that combine the American quilt format with traditionally dyed fabrics. "West African Patchwork and Applique" showcases the diversity of materials, techniques, and forms incorporated in patchwork and applique from this part of the world.
