"Ophelia's Dream," an organic landscape illuminated by a diffuse glow, is the culmination of a year-long evolution in the mid-1990s in Jan Myers-Newbury's work, as her focus turned from the highly structured forms of her earlier work to a more rhythmic, organic flow. Though still regimented in its use of the basic square form, the rippling "veins" of the piece, a product of hand-dyed fabric, seem to move and sway, changing the light from moment to moment. Myers-Newbury explains, "I have always been interested in manipulating color to create luminosity and the illusion of depth, and more and more of this seems to be happening in the dyepot, less in the piecing." ("Quilt National: Contemporary Designs in Fabric," p. 92).
