Betsy Cave's quilt was inspired by the hot sun shining on Manhattan sidewalks during a trip to New York City. The grid of the city blocks inspired the overlaid striped sashing. Beneath it, the circular quilting patterns evoke heat radiating off of sidewalks and buildings.

Cave uses complementary color combinations in each block, however the colors are off shades, reminiscent of Amish quilts in their rich hues. The borders of narrow black and white triangles play off the idea of the narrow sashing of the New York Beauty pattern.
