Quilt of the Month

August 2011

August 2011

One of Ardis James' great gifts was her witty and articulate way with words. In addition to featuring one of her own creations for August 11, we also included the original catalog entry, written by Ardis, of one of the James Collection quilts. We end this message with her own words: "“We never felt that we owned the quilts, but we were careful custodians, and are pleased beyond description at the way they have come home.”

Petals (prairie points) of rough cotton prints and solids arranged in target pattern, many with single stitch, in single color, with center of gathered cloth size of golf ball said to contain herbs to ward off evil spirits. No fragrance detected at this time. Rather long for crib size, the weight would do in any normal infant before evil spirits had their innings. White back, yellow binding.
