This stunning quilt, with its extravagant stuffed work and cording, is a courtepointe de mariage, or wedding quilt, from the Provence area of France. It was made to decorate the top of the nuptial bed on a couple's wedding night, and is appropriately filled with imagery related to love and abundance: roses for true love, daisies for femininity, and lilies for purity. The center medallion is bordered by olive branches and swags of rosemary, which also bear significant meanings related to wealth and love.
Two additional pieces, nearly identical to this one, survive in private collections. This may indicate that the quilt was created in a Marseille atelier, or workshop, by a professional quilter.
