"Low Meadow" depicts a lovely meadow adjacent to the artist's English garden. For more than twenty years Elizabeth Brimelow has walked through this field with her dog, over the stile at the far corner and on to the hills beyond. According to the artist, the challenge in creating the piece was to reveal her feelings about an area that was so familiar and close to her.
The Pennine hills that surround Brimelow's home contain the mysterious stone circles and dolman stones of early cultures as well as more recent excavations made for coal and clay resources. Some of the land has been marked by the necessity of annual planting cycles while other areas reflect man's historical march through time. Even the textiles used for Brimelow's art are a product of man's interaction with the earth. Revealing this intimate and ongoing relationship between man and nature through textile art reminds us of our dependence on resources we so often take for granted.
