Reflections of the Exotic East in American Quilts Exhibition
In the first quarter of the twentieth century, the influence of the Art Deco movement was seen in building design, furniture, jewelry and quilt design. The movement drew from a variety of influences, including the decorative arts of the Far East and Middle East. Plum blossoms, for example, have traditionally heralded the arrival of spring in both China and Japan. Although we do not know the designer of this quilt pattern, clearly she was influenced by the Art Deco movement.
